Surya J, wife of a 2005-batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer Ranjeeth Kumar J, is said to have attempted suicide. She has been admittted to the civil hospital in Gandhinagar where her condition is said to be normal.
According to Dr Niyati Lakhani, superintendent of Gandhinagar Civil Hospital, she was diagnosed with poisoning and was admitted to the ICU. The treatment is on. The doctor refused to give detail of the poison.
According to police sources, Surya J, who used to live separately from IAS officer Ranjeeth Kumar J, consumed poison. Sources in govt circles said the couple were estranged and had been living separately since 2023. At the time when Surya J had consumed poison, the IAS officer was not with her. He was staying alone in Gandhinagar near his office at Sachvalaya.
“When she started feeling uncomfortable, she called EMRI 108 after which she was shifted to the hospital, sources said.
Ranjeeth Kumar J is currently serving as secretary of Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC).Investigators said her statement is yet to be recorded to know the reason for her step. She was unconscious. Her statement will be recorded by a magistrate.
“It's only after that we'll be able to know the reason for the attempt,” he said.
Who is Ranjeeth Kumar J?
Ranjeeth Kumar has been working in Gujarat for last 19 years. Prior to he was serving as an officer in Tamil Nadu State Civil Services.
A mechanical engineer by academics, Ranjeeth started his career as a Design Engineer (CAD/CAM) in an automobile parts manufacturing company in Chennai. Later he moved to public service first in his native state Tamil Nadu and then in IAS Gujarat cadre.
During his career he has served at various posts including DDO in Bhavnagar District, Joint MD, GICC & Director of GIDB, Collector – Tapi District – Vyasa, Director of Food & Civil Supplies Department, Incharge Director – ICDS (Women & Child Development Department), Collector – Dahod, Tribal Development Commissioner, MSME Commissioner and Commissioner of BPE (Bureau of Public Enterprises, Finance Department).
