United Nations body lauds the role of consumer affairs secretary IAS Rohit Kumar Singh

United Nations Conference on Trade and (UNCTAD), a UN body working for of trade and development, has lauded the role of union consumer affairs secretary Rohit Kumar Singh at the seventh session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Consumer Protection Law and Policy, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on July 3 and 4, 2023.

UNCTAD secretary general Rebeca Grynspan wrote an appreciation letter addressing Rohit Kumar Singh, who is a 1989 batch IAS officer of cadre. A dynamic officer, Singh has also been appreciated for timely tackling the rising prices of tomatoes, onions and other essential food items. He has also had a successful stint in road transport and National Authority of India (NHAI).

“The meeting was a success, and I am delighted that UNCTAD remains at the forefront in the implementation of consumer protection policies for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. I would also like to congratulate you on your participation in the session for the Opening Plenary, and for the interesting initiatives your country is undertaking. I am particularly appreciative of your decisive support for the work of UNCTAD and I look forward to our continued cooperation strengthening consumer policies around the world,” she wrote.

The UNCTAD also presented its compliments to the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva and sent a letter of appreciation to Singh. 

Who is Rebeca Grynspan ?

Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica is the first woman and Central American to serve as UNCTAD's secretary-general. A former vice president of Costa Rica, Rebeca is a renowned advocate of human development, who has helped to focus the world's attention on relevant issues such as the reduction of inequality and poverty, gender equality, South-South cooperation as a tool for development, and the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, among others.
