Four people including three policemen were sentenced to 10-year imprisonment in a 14-year old case for attempting to murder an IPS officer Kalpana Saxena, who was serving as Superintendent of Police (Traffic) in Bareilly.
The Anti-Corruption Court confirmed that the accused tried to run a car over Kalpana Saxena, dragging her for 200 metres.
Saxena was also kicked and punched while they threatened to kill her saying, “Today is your last day.”
The IPS sustained grievous injuries and had to recuperate in the hospital for several days.
After discharge from the hospital, Saxena, lodged FIR against the three policemen and their accomplice who was a local goon.
Kalpana Saxena, who has been promoted from state police service, is currently serving as Additional Commissioner of Police (ADCP) of Ghaziabad.
What is the case?
The incident dates back to September 2, 2010 when Kalpana, in her first posting after being promoted to IPS, was serving as SP Traffic in Bareilly.
Kalpana received information that there was a severe traffic jam near Mazar on the Delhi-Lucknow National Highway. Three constables – Ravinder, Ravendra and Manoj – along with a local goon Dharmendra were extorting money from truck drivers and other passers-by.
When she reached the spot, she saw a long line of trucks on the road. The policemen were recovering from the truck drivers. When Kalpana cautioned them, the policemen rather than restraining, attacked the SP and tried to run the car over her. She was dragged for 200 metres before being beaten up by the accused.
Later when the crowd started swelling up, the accused ran away leaving SP in blood.
An FIR was registered against the policemen
Kalpana Saxena had filed an FIR after being discharged from the hospital. The police had registered a case under Section 307 of the IPC.
The police filed a chargesheet in 2010, after which the three policemen were suspended. Later, a departmental inquiry was conducted. The three policemen were sacked in 2014 after being found guilty in the investigation. A total of 14 witnesses and 22 evidences were presented in the court, after hearing which the court has now sentenced the four.
Who is IPS Kalpana Saxena?
Born on April 21, 1968, Kalpana Saxena is a resident of Meerut. She has done MA in Geography. He entered police service by clearing UPPCS exam and was selected as state police service officer in 1994.
After 16 years of service in the Uttar Pradesh Police, Kalpana Saxena was promoted to the post of IPS in the year 2010. His first posting in Bareilly was as SP Traffic. After that, she served at various posts.
She is now a DIG rank officer and has been appointed as Additional Commissioner of Police, Ghaziabad on 30 January 2024.
