SPG chief Alok Sharma promoted to DG level

SPG chief Alok Sharma has been promoted as Director General in SPG by temporarily upgrading the post of SPG chief.

() chief Alok Sharma has been promoted as Director General of Special Protection Group (SPG), the elite security unit responsible for the Prime 's security.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Office of Secretary (Security), Cabinet Secretariat for granting the grade of DG level (level 16 of pay matrix) to Shri Alok Sharma, (UP:1991) by temporarily upgrading the post of Director, SPG to the level of DG as a measure personal to the officer,” a DoPT order said.

Alok Sharma was appointed as director of SPG after the death of Arun Kumar Sinha in September last year. Sinha was on extension after retiring in May last year.

Sinha held the position of SPG chief from 2016 to 2023, making him the longest-serving director.

Alok Sharma, a 1991-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of , had joined SPG in 2017 as Inspector General. 

Who is Alok Sharma

Alok Sharma is a Science graduate (B Sc). Before joining SPG, he has held important positions in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He is considered as one of the most efficient and smartest cops in the country. The central government decided to continue with him by upgrade in the post temporarily to DG level as to as to accommodate him in that position.

Alok Sharma, recognised for his meticulous planning and tech-savvy approach to policing, hails from Aligarh and successfully organized the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj in 2013. His distinguished career in the IPS includes serving as Superintendent of Police in Unnao, Moradabad, and Bulandshahr, as well as Inspector General of Police in Prayagraj, Bareilly, and Meerut. He also had postings in Uttarakhand before going on deputation to the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in 2017. Later that year, he was appointed as IG in SPG.
