SMS Medical College and Hospital (the Sawai Man Singh Medical College and Hospital), Rajasthan's largest government hospital and medical college caught fire today in the wee hours.
According to staff, the microbiology laboratory of the hospital caught fire. Expensive machines, medical equipments and documents turned into ashes. There is no report of any casualty or loss of life in the fire.
According to SMS Medical College and Hospital staff, guard Subhash who was on duty saw flames coming out of the microbiology lab. He immediately called up police and fire brigade.
The fire was massive. Police called up civil defence personnel and it could be controlled after deploying three fire brigade for two hours. Assistant Fire Officer Shubham Sharma said that the fire has now been doused ruling out any further damage.
The police are investigating the cause of fire. Sources said that the fire could be aflammed to destroy documents of purchasing of machines.
“The government has changed. There are chances that fire may be caused to destroy evidences of corruption involved in purchasing of equipments and machines. Police is investigating. Higher officials have been informed about it,” sources said.
In July last year, Rajasthan's largest children hospital JK Lone had caught fire. There also no casualty had happened and the fire was controlled.
The incident happened at the 100-bedded prefabricated ICU having two different rooms on the rooftop of the hospital. 47 children were rescued out of which 22 were admitted in the same ward where fire broke out.
