Senior citizen falls victim to ‘sextortion’ using deepfake of former top cop

An AI generated deepfake video of a former additional general of police Prem Prakash was used to ‘sextort' a 74 year old Arvind Sharma for siphoning off Rs 74,000 in Ghaziabad.

According to the police, the victim's daughter filed a complaint stating that her 74-year-old father was blackmailed by scammers using a deepfake video and threatened to implicate him in false cases and also share an objectionable video of him on social media if he did not pay them.

The case:

Arvind Sharma, who works as a clerk in a private company, was contacted by fraudsters through a Facebook video call. Sharma took the call but disconnected it within seconds after seeing a nude woman on the other side.

After an hour, he got another video call on WhatsApp, from a police uniform who threatened him of releasing the objectionable video featuring the nude girl and Sharma.

Sharma, feared that it would cause him huge embarrassment, transferred Rs 5,000 to a bank account number given by them.”But they demanded another Rs 10,000 and then Rs 50,000 as my father kept paying. He also took a loan from the company where he works.

Based on the complaint, the Ghaziabad Police registered a case against the unidentified accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information (IT) Act.
