The Supreme Court has denied anticipatory bail to IPS Aditya Kumar of Bihar cadre in a case which involves serious allegations of a conspiracy to derive undue benefits through illicit means, including the creation of a false WhatsApp account.
Kumar, who has been absconding, is ordered to surrender before the concerned court within two weeks.
Kumar, who is on suspension till April 2024, is accused of creating a false WhatsApp account using a picture of the then Chief of the Patna High Court. Using this account, calls and messages were allegedly made to the Director General of Police, Bihar, with the aim of influencing decisions in Kumar's favour.
The case:
Aditya Kumar, a 2011 batch IPS, was booked for alleged connivance with liquor contractors in Prohibition case when he was posted as senior superintendent of police Gaya.
Kumar with the help of his friend Abhishek Bhupalka duped then director general of police S K Singhal by impersonating as chief justice of High court over WhatsApp.
The duo purchased fake Sim in the name of one Rahul Kumar and a new mobile and then made a fake WhatsApp profile of Patna High Court Chief Justice.
Abhishek Bhupalka
Abhishek then, impersonating as Chief Justice, made WhatsApp calls and sent messages to then DGP S K Singhal recommending early closure of corruption charges against SSP Aditya Kumar followed by a plum posting.
After getting repeated calls, DGP Singhal got suspicious and asked Economic Offence Unit (EOU) to look into the case.
The EOW in 25 hours busted this scam and arrested IPS Aditya Kumar's friend Abhishek Bhupalka along with nine mobile phones and fake sims.
Bhupalka accepted to have made phone calls to DGP obtain favorable postings or drop disciplinary proceedings against Aditya Kumar, who has been absconding since then.
