Rajasthan's Election Commissioner Dr. Madhukar Gupta has been bestowed with the “Election Commissioner of the Year” award at 19th International Electoral Affairs Symposium and Awards Ceremony held in Lisbon, Portugal.
This award ceremony was presided over by Augusto Santos Silva, president of the parliament of Portugal.
Gupta has been felicitated for his contribution in strengthening the electoral machinery in Rajasthan. His efforts towards creating awareness about right to vote has been appreciated globally and the award is just a testimony to his untiring work towards conducting free and fair elections.
The accolade recognises Gupta's exemplary leadership, unwavering commitment, and significant contributions to advancing electoral practices globally.
After receiving the award, Gupta said that this honour reflects to the collective effort to strengthen democratic processes across the world. He dedicated this award to the professionals working tirelessly in the interest of the electoral sector.
What is 19th International Electoral Affairs Symposium & Awards Ceremony?
This event is organised by the London based International Centre for Parliamentary Studies in collaboration with the Portuguese National Electoral Commission, from 13th to 16th November 2023.
It drew together leading figures in the world of electoral affairs, and recognise excellence in electoral management.
Who is Madhukar Gupta?
Madhukar Gupta is a 1985 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre. He was appointed as State Election Commissioner in 2022 – almost two years after superannuation in 2020.
An alumnus of Harvard (Mason Fellow), Gupta has rubbed shoulders in the field of academics and research with accomplished academicians including Stephen Cohen, Michael Porter, Joseph Stieglitz, Amartya Sen, Ricardo Hausmann, Jennifer Leanings and Yshang at Harvard Law School, HBS, MIT, Brookings, Syracuse, Maryland, Cornell, and Fletcher School.
He had been visiting faculty to several prestigious institutions and global universities including GWU, University of Maryland, University of Hawaii, Ben Gurion University, BITS and IIT Chennai to name a few.
As a bureaucrat, he has served in various departments and ministries in centre as well as state government.
He has had a long tenure of 16 years in four divisions as divisional commissioner, district magistrate in three districts and sub divisional magistrate at two places.
