The Rajasthan High Court has reserved the decision on a petition for granting parole filed by self styled God man Asaram. He has been lodged in Jodhpur jail for 11 years, serving life sentence in a rape case against a minor.
According to information, Asaram had applied 20 days parole citing Rajasthan Prisoners Release on Parole Rules, 1958 applicable to jail inmates.
However the district parole advisory committee had turned down Asaram's application on August 21, 2023 citing provisions of Rajasthan Prisoners Release on Parole Rules, 2021, which clearly states that prisoners convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012, are not eligible for release on parole.
However, advocates of Asaram has argued that the rule did not apply to Ashram as he had been convicted and sentenced before Rajasthan prisoners release on payroll rules, 2021 came into force.
