PM Modi lays foundation stone of Horticulture University at Karnal

Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of construction of main campus of Maharana Pratap Horticultural at Uchani Karnal.

The foundation stone laying took place in presence of Bandaru Dattatraya, , Haryana and Chancellor, MHU Karnal, Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Finance ; Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs and Minister of Power and Krishan Pal Gurjar, MoS Cooperation. 

The online event was organized at MHU campus site Uchani, Karnal in the Chairmanship of Dr. Suresh Kumar Malhotra, Vice-Chancellor, MHU in presence of more than 500 farmers and other dignitaries. 

The Foundation stone of main campus building of Maharana Pratap Horticultural University, Karnal was laid by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9th December 2024 through virtual mode from Panipat on the occasion of State Function held to launch Bima Sakhi Yojna. 

This is a very important and landmark achievement for Maharna Pratap Horticultural University, Karnal as well as people of Haryana State. 

“The university will be the seventh Horticultural University across India which is dedicated towards research, teaching and extension for augmenting production of the horticultural crops viz., Fruit Science, Vegetable Crops, Floriculture and landscaping, Mushroom Cultivation, Bee Keeping, Medicinal and Aromatic crops in the state. This university will play a significant role in enhancing the farmers income and also in generating employment for the state. The university will also play an important role towards development of horticulture-based crop diversification systems,” informed university vice chancellor Suresh Kumar Malhotra, who is an accomplished agriculture scientist. Malhotra had successful tenures as commissioner horticulture and commissioner agriculture in the union agriculture ministry.

University will be state-of-art institution

The Rs 700-crore University will come up on a sprawling campus of 65 acres of land at Uchani, Karnal besides National Highway-44. The main campus will include the academic and administrative buildings besides hostels, staff quarters, guest houses, playground, auditoriums, amphitheateretc. The education will be imparted for the various degree programs BSc Horticulture, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Fruits, Vegetable, Floriculture & Landscape gardening. 

In addition to it, the university has six Regional Research Stations located at different agro ecological regions of Haryana where location specific research on different horticultural crops is being undertaken. 

Under the changing scenario of Agriculture, the upcoming Maharana Pratap Horticultural University, Karnal will play great role in shaping the future of the agriculture by emphasising on horticulture and allied sciences which is essentially required for the upliftment of the farming community including women and youth of Haryana State as well as the adjoining states of India.
