Over 6800 corruption cases probed by CBI pending in courts, finds CVC in annual report

In a report that could shake the perception of common people who believe that Central Bureau of investigation as the most efficient and unbiased investigating agency, the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), has found over 6,800 corruption cases probed by the as pending trials in different courts, with 313 pending for more than 20 years.

The CVC, which oversees the of CBI related to investigations conducted under the Prevention of Corruption Act, took note of the large number of cases pending in different courts

It was observed that as on 31.12.2022, 6,841 number of cases were pending trial, out of which 313 number of cases were pending (trial) for more than 20 years.

Usually, the CBI is expected to complete an investigation within a year of registration of a case, however, 60 cases were pending probe “more than three years but less than years”, 79 for “more than two years but less than three years”, 138 for “more than one year but less than two years” and 373 for “less than one year”, said the report released recently.

Moreover, there were 52 cases of departmental action pending against ‘Group A' officers of the CBI themselves.
Reasons for delay

The report listed reasons for delays as- “delay in investigation due to excessive work”, “inadequacy of manpower”, “delay in obtaining responses to Letters Rogatory (LRs)”  and  “time taken in locating and examining witnesses living in distant places”, among others.
