Veteran BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha member Onkar Singh Lakhawat has been appointed as the chairman of Rajasthan Heritage Authority. This is the first political posting in the new BJP government led by chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.
During previous BJP governments also, Lakhawat had served as the chairman of Rajasthan Heritage Protection and Promotion Authority. First time from 2007-2008 during the first tenure of Vasundhara Raje followed by in 2014-2019 during the second tenure of Raje. He is considered a non controversial figure in the party.
Why Lakhawat gets this appointment?
Onkar Singh Lakhawat is known to a conservationist. He has spearheaded construction of monuments and panoramas dedicated to local heroes and folk deities of Rajasthan. Till now, he has presided over the building of more than 75 such panoramas and monuments. Some of these monuments included Prithviraj Chauhan memorial park in Ajmer, Dahar Sen Statue, Tejaji Panorama, Ramdevji Panorama, Pabuji Statue and Panorama.
His love for archaeology, art and culture has won him recognition and appreciation in society.
Who is Onkar Singh Lakhawat?
Onkar Singh Lakhawat is closely associated with Rashtriya Swam Sevak Sangh and is a big name in Rajasthan politics. Onkar Singh Lakhawat has held various positions in the government of Rajasthan, including UIT Chairman of Ajmer (1994-1997), Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha (1997-2000), Chairman of Rajasthan Heritage Protection and Promotion Authority (2007-2008) and (2014-2019), Minister of State (2015), and member of the Disciplinary Committee of BJP Rajasthan (2020). He also planned tours of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Lok Sabha election in 2019 and was a panelist in TV debates.
Onkar Singh Lakhawat doesn't have affiliation with any BJP faction. He is regarded as a veteran leader in the party. He has authored many books in Hindi on heritage and culture of Rajasthan
