Rajasthan's sports secretary Niraj K Pawan has written to IPL broadcaster Star Sports Limited and franchisee Rajasthan Royals for starting cricket commentary in Rajasthani language.
On the occasion of Rajasthan Diwas, Pawan, who is also chairman of Rajasthan State Sports Council said that he will discuss about starting cricket commentary in Rajasthani language with BCCI officials also when they come to Jaipur in April 1, 2025.
“Cricket commentary is available in regional languages like Haryanvi and Bhojpuri. Even though Rajasthani is not in the list of scheduled languages, why should crores of Rajasthani people should be deprived of commentary in Rajasthani language?” he asked.
Pawan said that many commentators and linguists have come forward to offer their services for commentary in Rajasthani.
“This will be great service to our rich language Rajasthani and people of our state,” he said.
What is Rajasthani language?
Even as the Rajasthan state assembly had passed a resolution to insert Rajasthani in the eight schedule of Indian constitution, the language has not been recognised. There are several dialects in Rajasthan like Marwari, Mewari, Hadauti, Dhundhari, Malvi, Vaagri and Shekhawati among others. It is hard to decide which dialect is the real Rajasthani. Hence there is a divided house among Rajasthanis on this issue.
“We really don't know, which dialect will be given place in cricket commentary. Rajasthan government should tell is this also,” said Samagra Singh Chouhan, a linguist, which has been fighting for getting recognition for Marwari as state language.
