Nina Singh, a 1989 batch IPS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, has been appointed as the first woman chief of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Singh, currently working as Special DG, CISF, will serve as Director General – the top post of the force – till her superannuation on July 31, 2024, the order said.
Nina Singh has been with the CISF since 2021. As the DG CISF, she will head the 1.76 lakh-personnel strong central armed police force, which is mandated to guard civil airports, the Delhi Metro and sensitive installations in the aerospace and nuclear domain.
Many firsts to her credit
Known to be a bold and intelligent officer, Nina Singh has many firsts to her credit. She is the first woman IPS of the Rajasthan cadre to attain DG rank. She also happens to be the first woman IPS from Rajasthan to be honoured with the President's Police Medal, a highly prestigious award. Nina was then on central deputation and posted as the Joint Director in the CBI force.
Who Nina Singh is
Nina Singh is a native of Bihar and the daughter of Ganesh Lal Das, who had served as ADM in the Bihar government. After graduating from Patna Women's College, Nina Singh post-graduated from JNU and then went for further studies to Harvard University.
After clearing UPSC, Nina was allotted IPS in the Manipur cadre. Later she got married to Rohit Kumar Singh, an IAS officer of her batch, who is now serving as secretary of consumer affairs. Since Rohit Kumar Singh is from the Rajasthan cadre, Nina Singh also got transferred to Rajasthan after marriage.
Like Nina Singh, Rohit Kumar Singh is also considered a ‘go-getter' officer with an impressive track record as joint secretary of Highways and member (finance) in NHAI.
Why Nina Singh is famous
Nina Singh is an intelligent police officer. During her six years of central deputation in CBI, she handled several high-profile cases like the Sheena Bora murder case, the PNB scam, the Nirav Modi case, the actress Zia Khan suicide mystery and the Chhota Rajan case among others.
Besides her image as an officer dealing with criminals with an iron hand, Nina is known to be sensitive towards women and has created many security systems to empathize with them.
According to several media reports, she undertook various remedial steps for the security of women during her tenure as member secretary at the State Women's Commission in Rajasthan. She was the one who prepared the administrative structure of the Women's Commission, which is still functioning successfully.
Anish Dayal Singh appointed CRPF chief
Apart from that, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs appointed Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) chief Anish Dayal Singh as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Anish Dayal Singh, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Manipur cadre, was holding the additional charge of the CRPF following the retirement of incumbent S L Thaosen on November 30.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Singh's appointment as DG of the CRPF up to December 31, 2024, which is the date of his superannuation, it said.
