K Kailashnathan, a 1979-batch former IAS officer of Gujarat cadre has been appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. He will replace C.P. Radhakrishnan, who has been sent as Governor of Maharashtra.
Kailashnathan, popularly known as K.K in the civil service circles, had held key positions in Gujarat, including Additional Chief Secretary.
He had worked very closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Kailashnathan had retired from his post at the CMO last month after a long tenure of 11 extensions.
The most powerful bureaucrat in the state, Kailashnathan served as principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was Chief Minister. He is considered very close to PM and is said to be eyes and ears of PM. He worked under four CMs- Modi, Anandiben Patel, Vijay Rupani and Bhupendra Patel.
Kailashnathan hails from Kerala but spent his school and college days in Tamil Nadu.
The appointment of a new administrative head for the Union Territory comes at a time when the Assembly has been convened for presentation of the Budget. The session is set to begin with the customary address of the Lt. Governor on July 30.
