Joginder Sharma, the last over wonder of 2007 T20 World Cup, has been booked by Haryana Police in connection with the suicide of a Hisar resident. The deceased hanged himself from a ceiling fan in his house allegedly due to property dispute. The police have registered case against five more people also.
Sharma is posted as deputy superintendent of police in Ambala.
The case:
The deceased Pawan, 27 years old, was under great stress. Her mother Sunita registered a complaint under IPC section 306 (abetment to suicide) against Joginder Sharma, who was earlier DSP of Hisar, and the others – Ajaybir, Ishwar Jhajhariya, Prem Khati, Arjun and Rajendra Sihag, a hockey coach.
In her complaint, Pawan's mother states that the reason behind death of her son is the house in which they a few living. A case of property dispute between her family and the accursed was pending in a Hisar court. The case was causing stress to her elder son Pawan, she said.
What provoked Pawan to commit suicide
Sunita said that a week back Ajaybir and his son Arjun has told Pawan to vacate the house. This caused tremendous stress on Pawan and he was forced to commit suicide.
Sunita alleged that her family has been living under stress for last few years. The accused have been torturing the family and threatening them to vacate the house.
On October 6, 2020, Sunita has lodged a complaint against the accused barring Joginder Sharma of criminal intimidation under IPC sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) and the SC/ST Act. Joginder Sharma was then the DSP of Hisar.
In that complaint Sunita had alleged that the accused had come to her house and threatened her daughter Kavita of dire consequences. Under stress and fear, Kavita had consumed rat poison. She, however survived after undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Sunita alleged that the police then had not lodged proper FIR against her written complaint.
Who is Joginder Sharma
Joginder Sharma is a former cricketer, who rose to fame in the last over of 2007 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan where he defended 13 runs to make Indian win the first T20 World Cup title.
Sharma, a month later joined Haryana Police as deputy superintendent of police. However, his cricketing career didn't shape up well. He played cricket sporadically at domestic and international level.
