IAS Abhishek Prakash under ED scanner, launches investigation

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched an investigation into an alleged extortion racket within , focusing on suspended IAS officer Abhishek Prakash. The probe centers on accusations of soliciting commissions for approving solar plant projects. 

The ED is preparing to file a money laundering case based on an FIR registered at Gomti Nagar police station. 

The controversy erupted when a solar energy equipment company accused intermediaries of demanding bribes for project approvals. The government responded by suspending Abhishek Prakash, the of Invest UP and a senior IAS officer. 

Authorities arrested middleman Nikant Jain, who allegedly acted on behalf of senior officials to solicit commissions.

The ED's investigation aims to uncover the extent of the racket within Invest UP. Officials are scrutinizing Jain's companies to trace financial transactions and identify other potential beneficiaries. 

Additionally, there are allegations that Prakash amassed assets beyond his known income sources, prompting further scrutiny.

Prakash has always been in controversy

The probe extends to decisions made during Prakash's tenure as CEO of Invest UP. Authorities are examining the evaluation committee meetings, particularly focusing on investment proposals that were rejected, to determine if any undue advantages were granted or if any proposals were unjustly dismissed.

The ED plans to collaborate with the Lucknow Police Commissionerate, Vigilance Department, and the Appointments Department to gather necessary documents and evidence. This coordinated effort aims to build a comprehensive case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Who is Abhishek Prakash?

Abhishek Prakash, a 2006-batch IAS officer, has held several key positions, including District Magistrate of Lakhimpur Kheri, Bareilly, and Aligarh. He served as the District Magistrate of Lucknow for over two and a half years and was appointed CEO of Invest UP in June 2022. 

Throughout his , Prakash has faced multiple allegations, including irregularities in land acquisitions and granting undue favors to certain builders during his tenure as Vice Chairman of the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA).
