I-T seizes Rs 1.4 crore and 1.5 kg gold from Ganpati Plaza lockers, search operation likely to continue

The Dhanteras proved golden for Income Tax department, which seized cash of Rs 1.4 crore, foreign currency and more than 1.5 kg gold from two abandoned lockers in the basement of Ganpati Plaza, a commercial complex in Jaipur.

The search will continue as many lockers are yet to be opened. The I-T department is investing and questioning the locker company regarding ownership of lockers. The department has so far checked 763 lockers while 337 are still left to be checked.

The I-T department has been searching in private lockers of Ganpati Plaza for last two months and has recovered more than Rs 10 crore cash and 14 kg gold, as per sources. So far on one has come forward to own these recoveries and I-T department is yet to give any official statement about these recoveries.

How I-T dept came to know about wealth

leader and Rajya Sabha member gave lead to the Department of Enforcement and Income Tax department about unaccountable wealth being stashed in the private lockers in the basement of Ganpati Plaza. He claimed that there are cash of Rs 500 crore and 50 kg gold deposited in these lockers. The money belonged to officers involved in several scams including department of information and jal jeevan .

Since then the lockers are under radar of I-T departments. It has been opening lockers regularly after giving summon to the owners of the lockers. In most of the lockers the KYC details are not proper and owners are difficult to be ascertained.

“What people do. They open lockers in the name of their servants, who after some time leave the job. Later lockers are being operated without fresh KYC,” said an official
