Former IPS officer Ajay Raj Sharma, credited as one of the architects of Uttar Pradesh's Special Task Force (STF), passed away at the age of 80.
His son, Yash Sharma, said the retired officer was admitted to Kailash Hospital in Noida in critical condition on January 25. He had been suffering from multiple ailments and succumbed on Monday night.
Yash stated that his father had difficulty breathing and also battled diabetes and high blood pressure.
A 1966-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Sharma played a key role in forming the STF in Uttar Pradesh. He and his team were instrumental in eliminating the notorious gangster Shriprakash Shukla.
Sharma also served as the Delhi Police Commissioner and later as the Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF).
After retiring, he resided in B-block of Sector 44, Noida. He originally hailed from Mirzapur district in Uttar Pradesh.
His last rites will be performed on Wednesday at the Lodhi Road crematorium in Delhi, Yash added.
