Former IPS officer Vijay Kumar and his wife Anupama, on Monday, joined the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

Vijay Kumar, a 1988-batch IPS officer had served as acting director general of Uttar Pradesh police from May 2023 to January 2024 before he retired. He was replaced by yet another IPS who is close to Yogi Adityanath- Prashant Kumar, who is 1990 batch IPS of officer. He is also serving as acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh.

Kumar, considered to be close to chief minister Yogi Adityanath, was said to be alligned with the ideology of BJP and that is the reason he served as acting DGP of the state.

After joining BJP, Vijay Kumar said that he had joined the saffron party as he was impressed with the party’s functioning.

“I am impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I have worked with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister (Yogi Adityanath). Impressed by his style of working and the positive atmosphere he has created, I have joined (the BJP). We have joined the party with the aim of social service,” Kumar said

He said that he has served public while working in police also.

“But there was a minor difference. While in politics one has to be open, in the police, there is a distance between the officer and the public,” he said.

Kumar further added that he will not face much problem in politics.

“My style of working was different than other cops. I used to work closely with public,” he said.

Apart from the couple, several Other leaders and workers from the Congress, Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party were also inducted into the party at its headquarters in the presence of deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak.

Brajesh Pathak exuded confidence that the ruling party will win all the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh and the NDA will cross 400-seat mark.
Uttar Pradesh will first go to polls in April 19 and the elections will complete in the state after all the seven phases.
