Former IAS Rohit Kumar Singh appointed as member NCDRC

Former IAS Rohit Kumar Singh has been appointed as member of NCDRC, which comes under consumer affairs ministry of which he was secretary four months back.

Four months after his retirement from post of union consumer affairs secretary, former IAS Rohit Kumar Singh has been appointed as member in National Consumer Disputes Redressal ().

The government has also appointed Justice Saroj Yadav, former Judge of as another member in the commission. 

The term of the member is for a period of four years from the assumption of charge or till the attainment of 67 years.

Rohit Kumar Singh, a 1989-batch former , which retired in March this year, has the opportunity to serve the complete term. 

The appointment of Rohit Kumar Singh comes a day before the superannuation of his wife Nina Singh, who is retiring from the post of DG Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). She is the first woman DG of CISF.

An alumnus of (BHU) and Harvard University, Rohit Kumar has served in various departments in centre as well as in Rajasthan. He had served in cultural ministryNHAI and road and transport ministry at centre before retiring as secretary of consumer affairs. In his home cadre Rajasthan, he had worked in departments like medical health, home, information technology, rural development, public relations and commercial taxes among others.

What is NCDRC?

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission or the NCDRC is a quasi-judicial commission established as per the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The commision was established in 1988. The NCDRC is headed by a retired or a sitting judge of the Supreme Court and comprises seven other members. 

The NCDRC is at the apex while it has 35 state commissions and 629 district fora under it.

The objective of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, as well as the respective state commissions and district fora is to provide speedy, economical and summary resolution of consumer complaints or disputes.
