Former CAG Rajiv Mehrishi gets discharged from AIIMS, returns home, started walking on support

Former Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Rajiv Mehrishi, who was undergoing treatment at after sustaining head injury, is recovering and has been discharged from hospital. He is recuperating at his home in Asiad Village in New Delhi. He has started walking with support and has been allowed to take light meals orally.

Mehrishi is being treated by Dr. Shashank Sharad Kale, who is a professor of neurosurgery in AIIMS and specialises in dealing with cranio-vertebral junction.

At home, he is being taken care of by his wife Mira Mehrishi, who is also a retired IAS of 1979 batch, a batch junior to Rajiv Mehrishi. Mehrishi's two sons also accompany her along with Chandra Shekhar Rajan, former of Rajasthan and close friend of Rajiv Mehrishi.

During his treatment at AIIMS union health secretary Sudhansh , who is 1991 batch Rajasthan cadre officer, also monitored his condition regularly and extended all the medical support and facilities needed.

What happened to Mehrishi?

Mehrishi was admitted in AIIMS on August 31, 2023 following a head injury which he suffered during a fall from at his home town Jaipur. Since then he was under treatment at AIIMS for more than 50 days. He was detected with haematoma (bleeding) in his brain and a clot was formed there.

According to doctors, the clot has been removed but complete recovery will still take a month or so.

How Mehrishi sustained head injury?

Rajiv Mehershi, 68, is a fitness freak. He would ride bicycle everyday 20-30 kms. While he was riding bicycle on road during morning hours as part of his fitness drill, he fell on road and sustained head injury. Though he was wearing a helmet. The impact was so big that he fell unconscious and was taken to a private hospital. After two -three days of initial treatment, he was sent to AIIMS for further course of action.

Who is Rajiv Mehrishi?

Rajiv Mehrishi is a 1978 batch IAS officer with a rare distinction of being the chief secretary of , secretary of two union ministries followed by attaining one of the most coveted constitutional posts of CAG.

Mehrishi is among very few bureaucrats who have been honoured with the Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian honours of the country, by the President of India.

A powerful bureaucrat Mehrishi is known to be a hard taskmaster and considered close to former chief minister Vasundhara Raje and former finance minister late Arun Jaitley.

He had been chief secretary during Raje's tenure before moving to centre to become union finance secretary when Arun Jaitley was the finance minister. Later he became union home secretary and scaled up the ladder to become CAG, post retirement.

On board of several companies

At present, Mehrishi has been appointed as independent director on board of many companies including Jio Financial Services, Tata Power, Piramal Enterprises and Dabur India among others.
