Ex-Maharashtra speaker Haribhau Bagde named Rajasthan Governor

Haribhau Bagde has been named Governor of Rajasthan. He will replace Kalraj Mishra, who has completed his gubernatorial term of 5 years on July 22,2024

Former Maharashtra Speaker Haribhau Bagde has been appointed as of Rajasthan replacing Kalraj Mishra whose term ended in July 22,2024. 

Bagde, 78, is a seasoned politician from Maharashtra. He had been cabinet in Maharashtra government twice during the alliance of BJP and Shiv Sena. On both occasions (1995-1997 and 1997-1999), Manohar Joshi was the . He was minister of horticulture and employment guarantee and later he also helmed food and civil supplies department.

Haribhau Bagde was first elected to Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha in 1985 from Aurangabad East seat. 

He won 2014 MLA against Kalyan Kale of Congress from Phulambri constituency, and went on to win the 2019 assembly election as well from the same constituency.

When BJP formed its first government in Maharashtra in 2014, he was appointed Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Devendra Fadnavis was the chief minister then.

Rajasthan's senior BJP leader Gulab Chand Kataria, who was made Governor of Assam has been sent as Punjab Governor. He will also be the administrator of Chandigarh Union Territory. 

Kataria will replace Banwari Lal Purohit, who had been at loggerheads with Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government in Punjab.

Former Gujarat Chief Secretary K Kailashanathan, who is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of .  

Santosh Kumar Gangwar will move to Jharkhand Raj Bhavan. Om Prakash Mathur is appointed Governor of Sikkim.

The Modi government also transferred two Governors to new states. Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan has been transferred to Maharashtra while Governor of Sikkim Lakshman Prasad Acharya has been appointed as Governor of Assam and with additional charge of the Governor of Manipur.
