Former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan showed his dissent about the recent activities of Directorate of Enforcement in non BJP ruled states.
Rajan, a vocal critic of Narendra Modi government's economic policies was speaking at the Jaipur Literature Festival.
He said that the action of ED is a big threat to democracy. Activating ED ahead of elections is not a good move.
“Putting opposition in jail will not serve the purpose. If the entire opposition is lodged in jail then where do we have any choice. This matter is not related to politicians only, this will impact all of us,” he said.
Raghuram Rajan bats for policy for education
On education system Raghuram Rajan said that a policy should be prepared for education system in the country.
“Students should know that what kind of job and package they can get after studying that. If this doesn't happen then it is not good for education,” he said.
Rajan said that education system should be improved not only in private but also in government schools. Most of the people let their children study in private schools despite availability of government schools.
He said that situation is continuously worsening in the country.
“Unemployment is one of the reasons. In such situation, more and more people should be provided with jobs within the country,” he said.
Raghuram Rajan said that in the last 10 years the graph of employment has dipped in the country. If there is 7% growth, it's in agriculture as people are going back to farming.
“As there are not enough jobs for people in the country. People should be skilled and trained as per the requirement of the industries,” he said.
Two Bharat in India
Raghuram Rajan said that the country has two Bharat.
“One is growing at a rate better than China while there is another Bharat where 80 crore people have to be given free food packets. We need to focus on technical, skill, education and medical,” said the top economist.
Raghuram Rajan said that the direct benefit schemes and freebies give political mileage.
“But we should focus more on education,” he said.
