Unidentified persons opened fire at the house of senior IAS officer Varinder Kumar Sharma, 2009 batch, Punjab cadre on Diwali night. No injury or damage have been reported so far. A case has been registered at the Sector 11 police station.
Varinder Sharma is currently posted as MD in Punjab Health System Corporation and also holding additional charge of special secretary in health and family welfare department and Secretary, Punjab State Human Rights Commission.
In a message, Sharma said, “I and my family are safe. I have no animosity with anyone so that angle is ruled out. I suspect that a celebratory firing was going on in one of the residences in the neighbourhood and a stray bullet landed in our bedroom (through window) and we had a proverbial escape. Incident happened around 11.10 pm on Diwali night and immediately police complaint was moved. Police are taking all legal steps.”
The incident took place at a well-secured area housing government residences of bureaucrats and judicial officers.
The police is investigating the case on every angle. According to police. the recovered part of the fired bullet indicates it to be from a 0.32 or 0.38 bore weapon. A forensic team has been deployed at the spot to ascertain the detail of the weapon.
“We are trying to get the CCTV footages all across. We safe also searching for the employ shell. Since the houses are of senior government officials, every house has armed security person. We are trying to obtain detail of weapons issued to them,” said a senior police official, who is investigating the case.
