PHED principal secretary Bhaskar Sawant has directed officials to put on fast track. He told them to clear all the obstacles in implementation of projects under JJM so that every house in rural areas get tap connection.

In a review of projects under Jal Jeevan Mission, Sawant took the status report of all the projects under progress. He discussed problems like delay in the by contractors, unnecessary delay due to permission from forest department and further delay in land acquisition for the project.

“It's a big challenge to provide tap to every house in a scattered population. We need to prepare a comprehensive plan to deal with the challenges,” he said.

Sawant directed officials to update all the progress on IMIS portal regularly so that problems can be assessed in relation to time.

“Officers should monitor the progress on ground and resolve issues immediately. Also, contractors who are not in sync with the progress rate should be penalised heavily,” he said.

What is Jal Jeevan Mission?

The JJM envisages the supply of safe drinking water through tap connections to all rural households by the end of 2024, and has set a target to supply 55 litres of water per person, per day, to every household in villages where the people have been facing water scarcity.

Under JJM, the state as well as state government give matching funds to provide clean tapped water to rural population.
