Former IAS and founder of Adyar Times Ambrose passes away

Former officer and founder of ‘Adyar Times' newspaper S P Ambrose passed away on Friday at the age of 95.

Ambrose is survived by his son A Janakan and daughter Nalini.

The funeral will be held at the Quibble Island cemetery at 11 am on Saturday.

Who was S P Ambrose?

Ambrose, who was appointed in January 1959 to the Administrative Service (IAS), Nadu cadre by promotion, retired in April 1986 as the Principal Administrator and the Liaison Officer in the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad.

Ambrose was secretary of the social welfare department, special secretary of the home department, chairman of the Madras Port Trust, chairman of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), secretary of health and family welfare department. He later moved to central government where he held position of Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Mines.

Post-retirement, Ambrose and his friend K S Ramakrishnan founded two of Chennai's most popular neighbourhood newspapers, ‘Adyar Times' and ‘Anna Nagar Times' in 1993.
