News of the day Thebuckstopper

The secretary of Kerala Dr V Venu has submitted a report to the chief minister Pinarayo Vijayan seeking reinstatement of of Police P Vijayan. This is for the second time Venu has requested withdrawal of suspension of the cop citing that his bling the duty again will not hamper the ongoing departmental enquiry.

The incident of IG Vijayan suspension has left police department into two groups. While few officers believed that government went harsh in the cop by suspending him rather than issuing warning letter, others think that the punishment was justified as he (Vijayan) had violated rules.

Who is Vijayan and why he got suspended

Vijayan is a 1999 batch IPS officer from Kerala cadre. He is an efficient officer and was chief of Anti Terrorist Squad before betting suspended. On May 18, Vijayan was suspended for getting in touch with police officers who were bringing Elathur Train accused Shahrukh Saifi to Kerala from Maharashtra.

Saifi allegedly had set fire to coach number D1 of the Allapuza-Kozikhode Express near Elathur station in Kozhikode district. The incident resulted in the death of three passengers, including a child, and nine passengers sustained burn injuries.

The objection was as to why Vijayan contacted police officials to know about Saifi when he (Vijayan) was not involved in the case. This accounts for breach of security. It was reported that there was a serious security lapse following the leakage of information regarding the transfer of the accused from Ratnagiri to Kerala – an allegation which Vijayan has been denying.
