Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla summons DM, SSP on Patna lathicharge case

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla summoned Patna District Magistrate (DM) Chandrashekhar Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajeev Mishra to Delhi on August 30 over police lathicharge on workers during a protest rally against on July 13, 2023.

Birla's reaction comes after BJP Lok Sabha MP Janardhan Sigriwal had filed a complaint alleging conspiracy to kill him and several other BJP leaders during the lathicharge.

Birla's intervention in this case has flared up politics in Bihar. The ruling JD (U) termed this as a drama while BJP spokesperson Singh said that law is equal for everyone.

“Whether it comes to SSP or DM, law is for everyone. Let it takes its own course,” he said.

What is the incident:

BJP leaders had held a protest march on July 13 demanding state employee status for teachers. They had also demanded resignation from deputy chief minister Tejasvi Yadav after his name was mentioned in the chargesheet of Land for case.

While participating at the protest march, 55-year-old Vijay Kumar Singh, a BJP leader from Jehanabad allegedly due to the lathicharge. BJP MP Janardan Sigriwal, who has Y category security, also got injured during lathicharged.

After the incident, SSP Rajeev Mishra said that the BJP leader's death was not due to lathicharge but the reason of his death was heart attack.

“BJP had taken permission to hold a meeting but the protest march was conducted without the requisite police approval. The police tried to stop the march but the protesters damaged barricades, sprinkled chilli powder and pelted stones at the cops, he said. Following which, police had to use water cannons and teargas shells and lathi-charge,” SSP had clarified.
