Vivek Joshi, a 1989 batch IAS officer from the Haryana cadre, has been appointed as the new Election Commissioner historical India. The appointment, made on Monday, is in line with the powers granted under the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023.
Joshi has been serving as the Chief Secretary of Haryana since 1 November 2024. Previously, he had served as union Secretary of department of personnel and training from 19 August 2024 till 31 October 2024. Prior to that, he served as Secretary, Department of Financial Services.
Joshi received Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Roorkee and he then earned a postgraduate diploma in International Business from the IIFT, New Delhi.
Later, he earned Degree of M.A and Ph.D both in Internal Economics from Graduate Institute g International and Development Studies.
According to an official release, the President's office confirmed the decision: “In exercise of powers conferred by section 4 of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023 (Act No. 49 of 2023), the President is pleased to appoint Dr Vivek Joshi, IAS (HY: 1989) as Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
