D. Magesh Kumar, an IPS officer and Joint Commissioner of Police in Chennai, has been placed under suspension following a sexual harassment complaint from a woman traffic police personnel working under him.
Magesh Kumar is a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG)-rank officer. He was serving as DIG/Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, South, Greater Chennai Police, until December 2024 and was subsequently transferred and posted as Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, North, Greater Chennai Police.
Sources in the department said two women police constables had submitted their complaints to the Director General of Police (DGP) and Head of Police Force Shankar Jiwal against Magesh Kumar. He was then placed under the vacancy reserve category. The complaints were referred to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) on sexual harassment.
Following a preliminary inquiry, the committee recommended the case to the DGP for further action, and based on the DGP's direction, Magesh Kumar was placed under suspension by the Home Department, the sources said.
They added the charges against the officer were of serious nature. “He was placed under suspension pending further inquiry as he tarnished the image of the police force. He will have to face criminal cases further,” a source said.
