Decision on RERC chairman likely soon

Rajasthan government is likely to appoint RERC chairman soon. It has already held two meetings and third meeting is likely this week for finalising the name form 40 applicants

The post of Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) is vacant since August this year. The government is likely to fill this post soon as it has started holding meetings for the selection.

The state government had invited applications for the prime post twice – extending the last date from June 28, 2024 to August 23, 2024. The term for the chairman is five years or till the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

“As many as 40 applications have been received. We have held two meetings of the selection committee for finalisation of the . Third meeting is scheduled this week. We will be able to zero in on the name after that,” said a senior energy department official.

However, he declined to share names of the candidates saying that recently retired officers have applied.

Retired IAS applied for RERC chairman

For this post many retired IAS and senior officers have applied including retired IAS officers Rajeshwar Singh, P K Goyal and Rohit Kumar Singh, who may not be in the contention after he had been appointed as member of National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC).

Among other contenders are retired IAS Dr Rajesh Sharma and retired district and sessions Judge Hemant Kumar Jain – both are currently members in RERC.

“It's been more than two months that the post has been vacant. The energy department first invited application till June 28, 2024. Little more than 30 applications were received. Then the last date was extended till August 23, 2024. Now there are 40 applications. It's upto the government to decide about the name,” said another official.

In the last Congress government, former IAS BN Sharma was appointed as the RERC chairman, who was a relative of Congress leader and the speaker of assembly CP Joshi.

“There is every likelihood that an officer with orientation will be appointed as the chairman,” the official said.
