Surya J, wife of 2005-batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer Ranjeeth Kumar J, died after committing suicide.
Surya J, who had eloped with a Tamil gangster nine months ago, returned on Saturday to Gandhinagar and tried to meet her husband. When she could not meet him, she ingested poison and die during treatment at a hospital.
Ranjeeth Kumar J, who is a secretary at Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission, didn't want to meet her wife and even refused to take her body after death. They were married about 20 years ago, in an arranged match, and have two children, who are with Ranjeeth Kumar in Gandhinagar.
He had instructed the domestic staff that his wife, who is involved in a child abduction case, should not be allowed in the house, said police.
Sources say Surya might have gone to her husband's home to evade arrest from Tamil Nadu police in the kidnapping case of a 14-year-old boy in Madurai. The case relates to an alleged kidnapping of a boy on July 11 over a monetary dispute with the child's mother. They had demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore but the Madurai police managed to rescue the boy. The cops had launched a manhunt for those involved, including Surya.
Surya J left behind a note
A senior police officer said that when they got Suriya's note, written in Tamil, translated, it was found to be addressed to the Tamil Nadu CM and that in it, she sought to proclaim her innocence in the two cases.
“The note left behind by Suriya is addressed to the Chief Minister of TN, in which she has said that someone identified as ‘Raja' lured her into a trap, and that she got entangled in two criminal cases in which he is the prime accused. One case pertains to loan recovery from a woman to whom Raja had allegedly given money, and another case is of kidnapping a boy… In the letter, she mentioned that her husband (Ranjeeth Kumar) is a noble man, who took care of their children in her absence,” the officer said.
Ranjeeth Kumar was seeking divorce
According to Ranjeeth Kumar's advocate, Hitesh Gupta, the couple had separated in 2023 and were heading for a divorce.
“Ranjeeth Kumar had gone out to finalise his divorce petition with Surya on Saturday. Upset at not being allowed in the house, she ingested poison and called up 108 (an ambulance helpline number),” said police.
