Brijesh Mehrotra, a 1989 batch IAS officer has been appointed as the new chief secretary of Bihar government. He will replace Amir Subhani (1987-batch) who has applied for voluntary retirement from the government job.
The general administration department in a notification said that the appointment of Mehrotra as the chief secretary will be effective from Monday , that is March 4, 2024.
Another IAS officer of 1990 batch Chaitanya Prasad has been notified as the new development commissioner, replacing Vivek Kumar Singh (1989-batch).l
Singh has already been notified as the chairperson of the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), Bihar.
Chaitanya will also hold the additional charges of the chairman-cum-member, the board of revenue, and the additional chief secretary (water resources department), till further order.
What is next for Subhani
Amir Subhani, a close confidante of chief minister Nitish Kumar is likely to be appointment as the chairperson of a state-level commission.
Subhani, who served as chief secretary for more than two years from January 2022, was due to retire on April 30,2024.
The chief minsiter Nitish Kumar has approved the VRS application of Subhani, who may be appointed as the chairperson of either the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) or the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC). The post of chairperson in both the commissions are vacant for some time. The post of BPSC chairman has fallen vacant after the retirement of former IAS Atul Prasad.

A native of Uttar Pradesh, Brijesh Mehrotra is considered close to chief minister Nitish Kumar. He is due to retire in August this year. Currently he was serving as additional chief secretary revenue and land reforms department. He has never gone on central deputation in his entire career spanning 35 years. He has served in various capacities in Bihar in Bihar government in Important departments like transport, science and technology, industries and governor secretariat.
